We\u2019re talking about things like bootleg DVDs and imitation purses with the real names, like Fendi purses for $100. These are the brands Amazon is trying to gate, or restrict, the selling of.<\/p>\n<p>And the restrictions Amazon\u2019s putting in place are quite rigid. To continue selling that brand, you have to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pay a non-refundable fee of up to $1,500 USD to get your brand approved to keep selling on Amazon,<\/li>\n<li>Include a letter from the manufacturer saying you\u2019re okayed to sell their items, and<\/li>\n<li>Send Amazon three separate\/different purchase invoices for products from that manufacturer or distributor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Why is Amazon Doing This?<\/h2>\n<p>Well, there are two different ways of looking at this. Amazon\u2019s official party line is that they want their buyers to shop for items they know won\u2019t be illegitimate or counterfeit. It\u2019s also a way for them to ward off problems before they even become problems. If they don\u2019t do some form of brand gating, then Amazon could potentially turn into a Wild West black market where anything can be sold.<\/p>\n<p>But the non-refundable fee also tells us that Amazon\u2019s trying to profit from this, too. After all, $1,500 USD per brand isn\u2019t exactly chump change, and can mean a huge hit for the smaller fish in the pond. Surely there\u2019s got to be a way to gate brands without putting even more money in Amazon\u2019s coffers\u2026?<\/p>\n<h2>Who\u2019ll be Most Affected by Amazon\u2019s Latest Brand Gating Efforts<\/h2>\n<p>As briefly mentioned above, medium-to-small sellers might have a hard time coming up with up to $1,500 USD per brand to keep selling it on their site. But third-party sellers, which make up almost half of all Amazon\u2019s sellers, will receive a huge dent to their budgets for the next little while until they can recoup that fee in sales.<\/p>\n<p>But hey, there\u2019s a bit of good news amid all this doom and gloom!
