{"id":8198,"date":"2017-08-17T10:37:43","date_gmt":"2017-08-17T09:37:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.repricerexpress.com\/?p=8198"},"modified":"2025-02-07T15:50:42","modified_gmt":"2025-02-07T15:50:42","slug":"amazon-seller-hacks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.repricerexpress.com\/amazon-seller-hacks\/","title":{"rendered":"5 FBA Seller Hacks to Dominate Amazon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Guest post by Will Mitchell from <a href=\"http:\/\/startupbros.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Startup Bros<\/a><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Our last blog post about <a id=\"link_55e069ad70b3b\" href=\"http:\/\/www.repricerexpress.com\/rank-your-products-higher-on-amazon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">how Amazon\u2019s algorithm ranks products<\/a>\u00a0was a huge hit, but everybody kept asking\u00a0us one question\u2026<em>Are there any quick hacks you can use to rank a new Amazon product FAST? <\/em>I\u2019m happy to report that YES \u2013 there are several. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here are the most effective tricks, hacks, and schemes you can use to rank your new product on Amazon quickly\u2026here&#8217;s five of the best Amazon seller hacks to help you dominate the marketplace.<span id=\"more-8249\"><\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Hack #1 \u2013 Winning the Buy Box<\/h2>\n<p>As an\u00a0Amazon seller, you need to know how to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.repricerexpress.com\/win-amazon-buy-box\/\">win the Buy Box.<\/a> This is a crucial part of successfully selling on Amazon, especially if you\u2019re not creating and manufacturing your own products.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s an example of what it means to win the Buy Box:<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"link_55e069ad70db5\" class=\"fbx-link\" href=\"http:\/\/3vxsjq3roj103wlhf71jhh7t.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Win-Amazon-Buy-Box.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8266 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/3vxsjq3roj103wlhf71jhh7t.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Win-Amazon-Buy-Box-1024x581.jpg\" alt=\"Win Amazon Buy Box\" width=\"1024\" height=\"581\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Of the 20 sellers for this product, only 4 of them are shown on the product page. You can bet that these four sellers are getting most of the sales for this listing\u2026<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re one of the 16 losers for this product, what could you do to win the Buy Box?<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Important Buy Box Metrics<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>First, let\u2019s take some time to review known Buy Box metrics. They can basically be grouped into three categories. For reference, you can see the first page of sellers for the kettlebell listing above, shown to your right.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pricing!<\/strong> \u2013 This is without a doubt the most important Buy Box metric.<\/p>\n<p>Even though the image of the product listing above says that there are other offers \u201cfrom $15.65\u201d, closer inspection of the listings reveals that those cheaper options are actually more expensive once you take shipping into account.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"link_55e069ad70ef6\" class=\"fbx-link fbx-instance\" href=\"http:\/\/3vxsjq3roj103wlhf71jhh7t.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Amazon-Price-Page-Listings.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8267\" src=\"http:\/\/3vxsjq3roj103wlhf71jhh7t.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Amazon-Price-Page-Listings.png\" alt=\"Amazon Price Page Listings\" width=\"338\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>By default, Amazon lists products on this page in order of Price + Shipping, and that carries into the Buy Box unless one of the other metrics are way out of whack.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Shipping Performance<\/strong> \u2013 Amazon puts an enormous priority on fast, hassle-free shipping for their customers. That\u2019s why they encourage sellers to use their Fulfilled by Amazon program.<\/p>\n<p>Shipping performance includes a number of individual metrics, including Order Defect Rate (ODR) and Perfect Order Percentage (POP), both of which we talked about in our last post on Amazon ranking factors.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>ODR<\/strong>\u00a0(Order Defect Rate) is how many orders are cancelled, returned, shipped improperly or get negative feedback for any reason.<\/li>\n<li><strong>POP<\/strong>\u00a0(Perfect Order Percentage) is how many orders go perfectly smoothly without any customer intervention.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Amazon also keeps track of how often you run out of stock, so try to maintain a 100% in-stock rate.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Seller Rating<\/strong> \u2013 It seems to me that the magic number for seller rating is 90%.<\/p>\n<p>The listings shown to your right are a great example. Every seller on the first page has a 90% rating or above. However, you can see that a seller with a 90% rating ranks higher than a 100% rating. It seems that as long as you hit 90% positive feedback, anything extra won\u2019t have a huge impact on the Buy Box.<\/p>\n<p>Conversely, it\u2019s uncommon for a seller with a &lt;90% rating to win the Buy Box.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>How to Win the Buy Box<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>One of the top sellers you see in the list above is WayFair. As I was poking around Amazon, I noticed them showing up a ton in our searches. They have over 200,000 reviews and this seller clearly knows what they\u2019re doing\u2026 Just about every item in their shop is winning its Buy Box.<\/p>\n<p>You can see another of their Buy Box-winning products below, shown here from inside their Seller profile shop:<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8268\" src=\"http:\/\/3vxsjq3roj103wlhf71jhh7t.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/WayFair-Amazon-Seller-Shop.png\" alt=\"WayFair Amazon Seller Shop\" width=\"929\" height=\"519\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So, what are they doing right? What are the specific steps to win the Buy Box? Turns out, there are only two:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Make sure you\u2019re eligible<\/strong> \u2013 Your product must have the same ASIN as the listing you want to be featured on (more on this below). You also must meet all the criteria listed above.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lower your price<\/strong> \u2013 If you\u2019re eligible, pricing is pretty much the sole determining factor. All you have to do is find out what your competitors are selling your product for, and offer to sell and ship it for one cent less. Voila, you rank higher in the Buy Box.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8269\" src=\"http:\/\/3vxsjq3roj103wlhf71jhh7t.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Lower-Price-To-Win-Amazon-Buy-Box.jpg\" alt=\"Lower Price To Win Amazon Buy Box\" width=\"902\" height=\"116\" \/><\/li>\n<li><strong>Use<\/strong> <strong>Fulfilled By Amazon<\/strong> \u2013 You\u2019ll get a special orange Fulfillment By Amazon icon (see above) on your seller listing when you use FBA. You\u2019ll also be able to compete on Amazon Prime listings, which is reason enough to join by itself. Plus, Amazon is constantly trying to push sellers onto FBA, so the sooner you hop on the bandwagon, the more rewards you\u2019ll reap.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>(NOTE \u2013 While lowering the price is certainly a good strategy to rank higher, it is not always a good long-term business strategy. You do NOT want to compete on price alone, as this will only start a price war\/race to the bottom.)<\/p>\n<h2>Hack #2 \u2013 ASIN Piggybacking<\/h2>\n<p>If you know how to win the Buy Box, your earning potential on Amazon instantly skyrockets. One of the most powerful tactics you can use is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.repricerexpress.com\/amazon-asin\/\">ASIN<\/a> piggybacking.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how it works:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Identify a successful non-unique product and find its ASIN. It will be listed in the Product Details section of the product listing. (shown below)<a id=\"link_55e069ad71347\" class=\"fbx-link fbx-instance\" href=\"http:\/\/3vxsjq3roj103wlhf71jhh7t.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Amazon-ASIN-Piggy-Backing.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8270\" src=\"http:\/\/3vxsjq3roj103wlhf71jhh7t.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Amazon-ASIN-Piggy-Backing.png\" alt=\"Amazon ASIN Piggy Backing\" width=\"574\" height=\"210\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Research the manufacturer to figure out how you can start reselling the product for yourself. Find out how much it will cost wholesale, and calculate what it will cost you to ship. <strong>Is there room between that number and $0.01 less than the current Buy Box-winning price for you to make a profit?<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><em>If the answer to and #2 is YES,<\/em><\/strong> contact the manufacturer and start selling. You\u2019ve just found a gold nugget!<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>If the answer to #2 is NO,<\/em><\/strong> you may still be able to work out a special deal with the manufacturer if you ask for it. However, if you don\u2019t think it\u2019s worth it, look around for other products in the same niche\u2026 Chances are, there\u2019s money to be made on a slightly lower ranked product.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Blackhat ASIN Piggybacking<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As you can probably guess, some sellers have developed a blackhat form of ASIN piggybacking. Basically, it involves finding knockoffs of popular products and listing them with the same ASIN as their non-knockoff counterparts.<\/p>\n<p>This works because the process Amazon uses to identify and spend misleading sellers is extremely cumbersome. The seller whose listing is being illegitimately piggybacked has to order one of the suspected counterfeit seller\u2019s products to prove that it is indeed a different product.<\/p>\n<p>It should be noted here that <strong>Amazon doesn\u2019t have anything against selling cheap knockoffs.<\/strong> They just don\u2019t like it when you lie about what it really is or who really made it. So, I\u2019m not telling you this method because I condone it, but merely to keep you informed doesn\u2019t Amazon seller. Someday it could happen to you!<\/p>\n<p>In order to keep your <a href=\"http:\/\/www.repricerexpress.com\/amazon-asin\/\">ASIN<\/a> piggybacking above the table, make sure that you\u2019re shipping the exact same product \u2013 with the same brand, SKU and manufacturing code \u2013 as the listing you\u2019re trying to piggyback.<\/p>\n<h2>Hack #3 \u2013 Custom URL Queries<\/h2>\n<p>The other really common follow-up request we had after our last post was for more information on how Amazon uses URL queries for search results and what you can do to take advantage of that.<\/p>\n<p>To show you what\u2019s going on behind the scenes when you use Amazon, let\u2019s start by looking at the URL for a search term you might want to rank a product for. When I search for \u201cstove top espresso makers\u201d from Amazon\u2019s home page, here\u2019s the URL that we get, shown in the image below:<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"link_55e069ad71483\" class=\"fbx-link fbx-instance\" href=\"http:\/\/3vxsjq3roj103wlhf71jhh7t.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Amazon-URL-Query-Hack.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8271\" src=\"http:\/\/3vxsjq3roj103wlhf71jhh7t.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Amazon-URL-Query-Hack.png\" alt=\"Amazon URL Query Hack\" width=\"927\" height=\"455\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In case you can\u2019t see, this is the URL:<\/p>\n<pre>http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/s\/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Daps&amp;field-keywords=stove+top+espresso+maker<\/pre>\n<p>If we dissect this URL, it\u2019s easy to see that the <strong>&amp;field-keywords=<\/strong> string is what Amazon uses to ID which search results to show. The <em>\/s\/?url=search-alias<\/em> is how Amazon tells itself to query a search results page, automatically sorted by best-sellers.<\/p>\n<p>So, if we\u2019re building links or promoting this page, we could strip the URL down to this:<\/p>\n<pre>http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/s\/?url=search-alias&amp;field-keywords=stove+top+espresso+maker<\/pre>\n<p><strong>Quick Note:<\/strong> For some reason, removing the ?url=search-alias returns a different set of search results\u2026 Not sure why, but either way make sure you keep that in if you want to make it look like someone searched for that keyword from Amazon.<\/p>\n<p>Now, let\u2019s see what happens when we click on a product from the search page:<\/p>\n<pre><strong>http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Primula-Aluminum-Stovetop-Espresso-Coffee\/dp\/B001J1L59E\/<\/strong>ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1422041743&amp;sr=8-2&amp;keywords=stove+top+espresso+maker<\/pre>\n<p>The part of the URL that\u2019s bold is all that you need to bring up this product page in your browser. Everything else is there to tell Amazon how the viewer arrived at the listing.<\/p>\n<p>You can see the <strong>&amp;keywords=stove+top+espresso+maker<\/strong> tells Amazon that I arrived at the listing by searching for \u201cstove top espresso maker\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>There are a couple of other keyword strings to be aware of. You may have to do some experimenting of your own to figure out specific URL string combinations that deliver the page you want to see, but knowing these queries will give you a great starting point:<\/p>\n<p><strong>&amp;node=<\/strong> is what Amazon uses for categories. If you click on \u201cAll Departments\u201d and enter the Kitchen &amp; Dining category, you\u2019ll get this URL:<\/p>\n<pre>http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/kitchen-dining\/b\/ref=sd_allcat_ki?ie=UTF8&amp;node=284507<\/pre>\n<p>Just like with the <em>&amp;field-keywords=<\/em> string, the only part of the URL necessary to tell Amazon to bring us to the \u201cKitchen &amp; Dining\u201d category is the <em>&amp;node=<\/em> query, in this case, <strong>&amp;node=284507<\/strong>. So, if we wanted to link to this page, you could strip down the URL to this:<\/p>\n<pre>http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/s\/&amp;node=284507<\/pre>\n<p><strong>&amp;field-brandtextbin=<\/strong> is another URL string you\u2019ll want to be familiar with. It\u2019s what tells Amazon to filter your search by a brand name. Since many customers already know what brand they want, you may be able to use this query for tracking and SEO purposes.<\/p>\n<p>To bring everything we\u2019ve learned about custom URL queries together, let\u2019s say we wanted to bring up the search results page for the term <strong>\u201cespresso maker\u201d<\/strong> in the <strong>Kitchen &amp; Dining category<\/strong>, filtered by the <strong>Breville brand<\/strong>. Here\u2019s what the URL would look like:<\/p>\n<pre>http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/s\/&amp;field-keywords=espresso&amp;20maker&amp;node=284507&amp;field-brandtextbin=breville<\/pre>\n<p>One important thing to note here the use of the <em>&amp;20<\/em> character instead of the <em>+<\/em> character in the URL. This tells Amazon to separate your keywords with spaces instead of actual plus signs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to Use Custom URL Queries<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You may remember that Amazon keeps track of which products people end up buying after searching for a given keyword. They then use that data to help them decide which products are most relevant to the original search term.<\/p>\n<p>This means that you can drive traffic to a product page using a custom URL and make Amazon think all those people came from a search result for your target keyword or brand. That way, every sale you make from that link counts toward that specific search term\u2019s relevancy!<\/p>\n<p>Make sense? No? Don\u2019t worry, here\u2019s a real-life example:<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s say you want to make this product rank higher for the \u201cbest espresso maker\u201d keyword in the \u201cBreville\u201d brand:<a id=\"link_55e069ad71710\" class=\"fbx-link fbx-instance\" href=\"http:\/\/3vxsjq3roj103wlhf71jhh7t.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Ranking-Your-Amazon-Product-With-URL-Search-Query-Hacks.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8273\" src=\"http:\/\/3vxsjq3roj103wlhf71jhh7t.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Ranking-Your-Amazon-Product-With-URL-Search-Query-Hacks.jpg\" alt=\"Ranking Your Amazon Product With URL Search Query Hacks\" width=\"957\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You could theoretically make Amazon think that every visitor to this page came from the search page for \u201cbest espresso maker\u201d, filtered to the Breville brand, by directing traffic to this URL:<\/p>\n<pre>http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Breville-BES870XL-Barista-Express-Espresso\/dp\/B00CH9QWOU\/&amp;field-keywords=best%20espresso%20maker%20&amp;field-brandtextbin=breville<\/pre>\n<p>Now, every purchase a visitor makes through that link would count as coming from our target search term, \u201cbest espresso maker\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Keep in mind, this isn\u2019t 100% proven to work, but everything we know about Amazon\u2019s ranking algorithm tells us it should. Plus, the absolute worst-case scenario is that you\u2019re driving extra sales to one of your products\u2026 Amazon isn\u2019t like Google where they\u2019ll punish you for trying to optimize for their search engine.<\/p>\n<p>By the way, if you\u2019ve got lots of capital, you can fast-track this process yourself:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Search for a term you want to rank a product for<\/li>\n<li>Click on your product<\/li>\n<li>Buy it<\/li>\n<li>Change your IP (make sure to clear your cache) or get on a different computer.<\/li>\n<li>Repeat!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Of course, if you had that much capital \u2013 it may be better to spend it on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.repricerexpress.com\/amazon-announcement-amazon-to-close-amazon-products-ads-programme\/\">Amazon Sponsored Product Ads<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Hack #4 \u2013 Vendor Powered Coupons<\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019re an Individual Seller with a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.repricerexpress.com\/create-amazon-seller-central-account\/\">Pro Merchant account<\/a>, a Professional Seller or a Vendor, then you can use Amazon\u2019s built-in promotion tools. The savviest of shoppers always make use of Amazon\u2019s daily deals.<\/p>\n<p>You can access these deals for yourself by clicking on the &#8220;Today\u2019s Deals&#8221; link in the top-most navigation menu next to the Amazon logo (underlined in green below). That link will take you to a page like this:<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"link_55e069ad7186d\" class=\"fbx-link fbx-instance\" href=\"http:\/\/3vxsjq3roj103wlhf71jhh7t.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Amazon-Daily-Deals-Page.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8274\" src=\"http:\/\/3vxsjq3roj103wlhf71jhh7t.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Amazon-Daily-Deals-Page.png\" alt=\"Amazon Daily Deals Page\" width=\"923\" height=\"742\" \/><\/a>As you can see, this section of Amazon\u2019s website is almost a department unto itself. Promotions are given their own unique links and listing pages. The part I\u2019d like to draw your attention to is the Coupons link, highlighted in the blue box above. This page takes you to a list of Amazon\u2019s most popular Vendor Powered Coupons (VPC) in a variety of categories. See the page for yourself below:<\/p>\n<p>Scrolling down the page, we see coupons for Outdoor Gear &amp; Clothing, Grocery &amp; Gourmet, Baby, Household Supplies, Electronics, Personal Care Appliances, Kitchen, Industrial &amp; Scientific, and Other Coupons. There are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.repricerexpress.com\/amazon-seller-central-coupons\/\">coupons categories<\/a> for just about <em>everything<\/em> except for digital content!<\/p>\n<p>Depending on your seller status, you can create your own VPCs for any products you sell.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What Can You Do With Vendor Powered Coupons?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Lots of stuff!<\/p>\n<p>Here are three straightforward ways to make the most of your VPC promotions:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Promote VPCs just like you\u2019d promote any other Amazon product listing.<\/strong> Coupon pages have their own independent sales rank. So, if you\u2019re a new seller or trying to compete in a tough niche, you may be able to get more eyes on your product by promoting a coupon for it instead of the listing itself.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Create a bigger discount or coupon than your competition.<\/strong> This is a similar tactic to winning the Buy Box\u2026 Since Amazon tries to give customers the best possible deal, you only need to offer a <em>little bit<\/em> better of a coupon than your competition to maximize your chances of getting showcased on the Coupons page.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Promote your VPCs on third-party deals sites.<\/strong> This is a really sweet hack that can get you decent levels of traffic with very little effort. Simply search Google for \u201csubmit a deal\u201d and you\u2019ll get a list of 500,000+ websites that all want to showcase your deals. Submit your coupons to 10 of these sites per day (not all of them will take online coupons) and <em>if your deal is eye-catching enough,<\/em> you should start seeing some steady traffic flowing in.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Give your VPCs out to friends and family in exchange for reviews\/sales metrics.<\/strong> This is also an awesome hack, which most of our clients use with great success. You can set up a VPC and discount your product down to your total costs (so you\u2019re not taking a loss on each sale, but breaking even). Then give this VPC out to friends and family, and have them buy it through Amazon on their own. Most people will be ecstatic to receive such a deeply discounted product, and you\u2019ll get a \u2018Verified Purchase\u2019 review \u2013 as well as a boost in your initial sales data!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Important<\/strong> \u2013 For #3 to work you really need to offer a standout deal. The penny-pinching you can get away with on Amazon probably won\u2019t be enough to get you featured on the most popular Daily Deals sites.<\/p>\n<p>Again, not everybody can make use of Vendor Powered Coupons or Amazon\u2019s other built-in promotion tools. However, if you have the right type of account, be sure to check them out!<\/p>\n<h2>Hack #5 \u2013 Automated Tools for Amazon Sellers<\/h2>\n<p>Finally, no discussion of Amazon hacks would be complete without talking about the most important part of scaling <em>any<\/em> e-Commerce business\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Automation!<\/p>\n<p>As you continue reading, we\u2019re quickly going to look at three of the most powerful ways you can automate selling on Amazon.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Please note!<\/strong> This is <em>not<\/em> one of those posts where we\u2019re secretly trying to get you to buy a bunch of stuff.
