Find your sales tax filing due dates<b> <\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.taxjar.com\/january-sales-tax-due-dates-2017\/?utm_source=repricerexpress&amp;utm_campaign=salestaxstorm&amp;utm_medium=blog\">This list<\/a> shows when January sales tax is due in each US state.<\/p>\n<h2>2. Report your owed sales tax for each state where you have a sales tax nexus<\/h2>\n<p>Sales tax nexus is roughly defined as having a \u201csignificant presence\u201d in a state. If you have sales tax nexus you will be required to file returns in that state. If you\u2019re based in the US, you will have always have nexus in your home state, but you can also have nexus in other states due to business activities like employing remote workers in a state, selling at craft fairs within a state, or having a warehouse stock your merchandise within a state. File your sales tax returns<\/h2>\n<p>After you\u2019ve figured out how much sales tax you\u2019ve collected in each state where you have nexus and where you\u2019ve collected it, you\u2019ve finished the hard work! Now it\u2019s time to file each individual state sales tax return. There are a few options for filing:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>File online:<\/b> To file online, you\u2019ll need to find your state\u2019s sales tax portal website, fill out its detailed form, and then submit a payment\u2013usually a separate system from the portal.<\/li>\n<li><b>File by post: <\/b>This option is still around for some states, but others have discontinued the option to mail in your sales tax returns.<\/li>\n<li><b>AutoFile: <\/b>Using this option, TaxJar will file your sales tax returns and remit any sales taxes owed to the state on your behalf. You won\u2019t have to worry about completing forms or reporting the taxes yourself\u2013it\u2019s all done automatically! This service is available in most US states, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.taxjar.com\/autofile\/?utm_source=repricerexpress&amp;utm_campaign=salestaxstorm&amp;utm_medium=blog\">AutoFile<\/a> is even smart enough to determine if your state has a discount for filing on time and will apply that discount automatically when applicable.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Regardless of how you file your US sales tax returns, please ensure that you file for every state where your business is registered even if you owe no sales tax for that particular filing period.<\/p>\n<h2>4. Prepare for Next Year\u2019s Perfect Storm<\/h2>\n<p>After you\u2019ve filed and as you conduct business in 2018, make sure that you keep track of any new states where you have newly established nexus and that you\u2019ve <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.taxjar.com\/how-to-register-for-sales-tax-permits\/?utm_source=Square&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=July2015\">registered for permits in those states<\/a> as soon as you discover you have nexus. This will make your life easier next January during the next \u201cPerfect Storm\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>You may also find that you no longer have nexus within a state, and in that case you should <a href=\"http:\/\/www.taxjar.com\/states\/?utm_source=Square&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=July2015\">contact that state\u2019s department of revenue<\/a> to let them know you\u2019re ready to end your business relationship with that state. Keep in mind that some states have<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.taxjar.com\/trailing-nexus-sellers-care\/\"> \u201ctrailing nexus,\u201d<\/a> so you\u2019ll want to check that state\u2019s regulations regarding how long you must continue filing after your cause of nexus has ended.<\/p>\n<p>We at TaxJar know that dealing with sales tax is never <i>fun<\/i>, but having a system to automate the bureaucratic pain away makes it less of a hassle and leaves you with more time to conduct your business.
